River Ave

Fourth River is carrying out multi-year vegetation and habitat management along the River Avenue trail corridor. Work is organized across multiple project areas and coordinated among several organizations and field crews.

What We’re Working Toward

Management along River Avenue focuses on preserving useful existing vegetation, improving habitat structure and ecological function, maintaining trail access and sight lines, reducing aggressive vegetation, and establishing plant communities that can be sustained through ongoing care.

Coordinated Field Work

Vegetation management along River Avenue involves several workforces, including Fourth River, Landforce crews, Friends of the Riverfront staff and volunteers, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works, and other private contractors.

Different organizations carry out different portions of the work. Fourth River facilitates a broader working group that coordinates field activity, management priorities, information sharing, and long-term planning across participating organizations.

Trail Segments

The River Avenue corridor is divided into approximately 100-foot trail segments marked with brown trail markers. Segment numbers provide a common location reference for field work, monitoring, planning, and communication between crews and organizations.

Funding

Fourth River’s work along River Avenue is funded through projects with Friends of the Riverfront and Riverlife, including significant support through Riverlife’s UpKeep initiative.
